Do you like grappling with issues constantly? That is unlikely, and it's a very rare person who does. Ending them quickly is what I prefer. But, you really can't deal with most obstacles in this fashion.
Many are best handled in more subtle ways using some finesse. I recall that my dad remarked to me, “If I can’t go through an issue, I try to sneak around the problem, and if I can’t go around it, I try to get under it, and if I can’t get under it, I try to go above it, and if I can’t go over it, I just attack it."
I favored and used my father's advice for my entire business career.
Let me show you how to put this useful advice into day to day applicable.
Initially, find out if the roadblock can be forgotten. A very high percentage (perhaps as much as 80%) can be dealt with in that fashion.
It is the last 20% that will require your energy.
Use the initial thought that comes to your mind initially.
Always try that before you use brute force. In summary, it can be stated in one sentence:
If you can’t get over, under, or around the trouble, stand up to it aggressively.
That said, facing issues up front is not pleasant.
However, out of trouble come wonderful opportunities.
President Jefferson had a very similar thought concerning the major issues he faced. Our president advised, “Always take hold of things by the smooth handle."
All of this is really about the same general idea. You don't need very many resources either. You'll need to assemble 3 specific items only. Paper, a pencil and a chair.
Initially write down quick and fast as you can all the obvious remedies.
The next step is to make another list of thoughts. Generally, the second list will be shorter than the first. This is because you'll be focusing on the best solutions only. Nonetheless, try to find a couple of good ideas. Plus, this second list could take some time.
Then, pick the best one. After that compile the strengths and weaknesses of the best solution. Make two columns. One for strengths and the other for the weaknesses. You are trying to determine the level of quality of the idea you picked.
This is about a 10 minute overall program.
As time goes on your effectiveness will also get better.
